North Texas museum debuts Lion King exhibit, bridging African art and Broadway

The African American Museum of Dallas is showcasing a new exhibit “From Africa to the Broadway Stage: Disney’s The Lion King.”

DALLAS — Black History Month honors the achievements and struggles of African Americans throughout U.S. history, and it’s a great time to visit the African American Museum of Dallas for a special exhibit to celebrate the diversity of Black talent.

In partnership with Broadway Dallas, the exhibit is called, “From Africa to the Broadway Stage: Disney’s The Lion King.” The exhibit will be on display until July 3.

“The exhibit is an excellent example of the inseparable connectivity between the performing arts and the visual arts,” said Margie Reese, Interim Executive Director of the African American Museum, Dallas.

The exhibit will explore how African artwork and designs are used and reflected in the popular Broadway musical.

The museum is steps from the historic Music Hall at Fair Park where “The Lion King” will play for five weeks this summer, presented by Broadway Dallas. The show runs from June 4 to July 3.

“This collaboration also allows us to highlight the shared mission of our organizations to inspire and educate through the arts,” said Ken Novice, President and CEO of Broadway Dallas.

From the stage to the big screen, in December 2024 “Mufasa: The Lion King,” debuted in theaters offering a fresh exploration into Mufasa’s origin story.

In addition to the Lion King Exhibit, there are two exhibits at the museum highlighting Black artists.

The Clay, Grasses and Reeds” exhibition will feature ancient traditions, techniques, and functions of African pottery and basketry and their influence on contemporary culture.

The Carrol Harris Simms National Black Art Competition and Exhibition features a variety of compelling works by Black artists from around the country, including many from North Texas.
