North Texas police hunt for ‘well-dressed’ serial bank robbery dubbed ‘Derby Desperado’

The FBI says the dapper thief has successfully used a fedora, sunglasses, blue gloves, and surgical mask disguise to rob two Dallas-area banks.

DALLAS — He’s arguably the best-dressed criminal, and the FBI’s Dallas Division needs the public’s help tracking down a bank robber dubbed the “Derby Desperado.”

The FBI says the dapper thief has successfully used a fedora, sunglasses, blue gloves and surgical mask disguise to rob two Dallas-area banks, according to a news release.

On July 3 around 1:30 p.m., Derby Desperado walked into the Texans Credit Union on Telecom Pkwy in Garland speaking loudly on the phone, walked to the counter, and handed the teller a note demanding cash. He was seen leaving the bank in a dark SUV with an undisclosed amount of money.

Nine days later, he struck again, robbing a Capital One Bank at 2903 Forest Lane in Dallas, using the same disguise and passing the same note. The getaway vehicle was the same dark SUV seen during his Garland robbery.

He’s described as a man with a fair skin complexion with green or hazel eyes, about  5’7″ to 5’9″ tall, with a stocky build.

During the July 3 robbery, he was seen wearing a dark-colored suit, white shirt, dark tie with light-colored stripes, brown shoes, a light fedora-style hat with a dark band, a white surgical mask, and blue surgical gloves.

During the Dallas robbery, he wore a dark-colored suit, a dark shirt, and a light or yellow tie.

If you recognize him or have information that could lead to an arrest you’re urged to call FBI Dallas at 972-559-5000. You can also submit an anonymous tip at tips.fbi.gov
