North Texas school district wants to close 4 schools, citing potential budget savings

The proposal will be voted on by the school board at its next full meeting on March 6.

CARROLLTON, Texas — The Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District is proposing to close four schools at the end of the year as part of a consolidation plan.

Central Elementary, Furneaux Elementary, McCoy Elementary and Long Middle School are the schools recommended to be closed in the proposal, according to a news release from the district Thursday.

The proposal will be voted on by the school board at its next full meeting on March 6.

“We understand that these recommendations can be difficult to process for many of our students, staff and families,” Superintendent Dr. Wendy Eldredge said in the release. “This has been a challenging process but we are confident we can get through this with the strength, passion, love and support of our CFB Family.”

The school district is estimating it will save up to $9 million in the first year of the schools’ closures. The plan would also reduce more than 2,300 empty seats across the district, officials said.

Along with closing schools, the district’s proposal will include the consideration of new attendance zones, which have not been changed for more than 20 years, according to officials.

“If the proposal is approved, the majority of campuses will see some adjustments within their attendance zones, but most students are anticipated to remain at their current school,” the release said.

The district is considering the Furneaux school property to be used as a possible Pre-K center, and the Central and Long properties to be used for temporary classrooms. The McCoy property would be sold, officials said.
