Moviegoers in North Texas can experience Ryan Coogler’s Sinners in IMAX 70mm at Cinemark in Dallas.
DALLAS — Moviegoers in North Texas are getting a rare opportunity to experience the new horror film Sinners the way its director says it was truly meant to be seen: on IMAX 70mm film.
The highly anticipated thriller, directed by Ryan Coogler, opened in theaters this weekend. But for a select few audiences, the experience goes beyond the usual big screen.
Only 10 theaters worldwide — and just eight in the U.S. — are screening Sinners in IMAX 70mm, a film format known for its stunning depth and detail. One of those exclusive locations is right here in Dallas, at the Cinemark 17 XD and IMAX on Webb Chapel Road.
In a social media video posted to Kodak’s X account, Coogler walked viewers through the many different formats that were used to shoot the movie and the many different options for people to view it.
“When you go to buy your tickets, depending on where you live, there’s going to be a lot of options of available to you,” Coogler said.
He assured his audience that a lot of work went into creating a quality product, regardless of the viewing experience, but he did share that the 70mm IMAX format was special, calling it “real rare”.
“It’s a really incredible way to experience movies,” Coogler said in the video. “It’s the way I came up experiencing movies.”
A spokesperson for Cinemark confirmed that the film’s Friday showings were sold out by early afternoon. The general manager at the theater told WFAA there was “very limited seating” left for showings throughout the weekend. He advised people wanting to experience the film in this format to look for showings during the week and the second weekend of the film’s two-week run.
Marque Simmons was one of the people who snagged a ticket for a Friday showing.
“Having a film like this in 70mm IMAX is really incredible because it really expounds on everything a horror film should be,” he said.
Simmons, who also works in film as a screenwriter, said experiencing a film in an immersive way changes the entire experience.
“If you’re not attentive to it, you’re not really in the vibe of it. You’re not really in the moment,” he said.
The Cinemark showing Sinners in 70mm IMAX also used the technology to show Chris Nolan’s Oppenheimer in 2023. Coogler referenced the film and its director in his video when speaking about different examples and inspirations for his work and methods.
A spokesperson for Cinemark said that, in July 2023, people travelled from other countries and states to see the film this way.
Cinemark’s ticket website is selling tickets to see Sinners in 70mm IMAX for $20.
