Overturned concrete truck shuts down eastbound lanes of Loop 1604 near Hwy 281; driver taken to hospital after crash

A concrete truck driver is in critical condition after a rollover crash on Loop 1604 near Highway 281 on Thursday afternoon.

San Antonio police said it appears the truck was heading westbound on the main lanes of Loop 1604 when it struck something around 1:20 p.m. and ended up in the eastbound lanes.

The truck rolled over, and the driver was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

It’s unclear if the truck rolled over several times, but it likely slid a few hundred feet. It was not full at the time.

Loop 1604 was closed in both directions. The westbound lanes of the highway have reopened, but police believe the other lanes will be closed for the next few hours as crews work to remove the crushed vehicle.

“First things first, we got to process the scene as the most important thing. After that, we can do the clean-ups. It is definitely, you know, complicated work, but we got all the resources that we need on scene,” an officer at the scene said.

Drivers are asked to find an alternate route.
