Penguin at Texas zoo undergoes melanoma treatment

WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — An African penguin at the Cameron Park Zoo is undergoing specialized treatment for melanoma.

The Waco zoo said 30-year-old Mauri was diagnosed before his arrival and is receiving care at Veterinary Specialists of North Texas. Mauri’s treatment includes bi-weekly injections of a chemotherapy formulation going directly into the tumor, along with the administration of a melanoma vaccine originally developed for use in dogs.

To ensure Mauri’s comfort during this treatment, he will be accompanied by his mate Rita, according to the zoo. Veterinary staff recognized the importance of reducing stress in animals undergoing medical care, and Rita’s presence will help provide the emotional support Mauri needs during transport and treatment.

The zoo said it prides itself on providing world-class care for its animals, from preventive
health measures to address specific medical conditions like Mauri’s melanoma.

While melanoma isn’t uncommon in African penguins, none of the other members of his waddle are affected, according to the zoo.

The zoo said Mauri’s journey highlights both the resilience of wildlife and the importance of thorough veterinary care. Updates will be shared on his progress.
