Pharr, Texas – On July 29, 2024, the City of Pharr marked a significant milestone in trade and travel facilitation with the completion of the Northbound Lane Expansion and the second Border Safety Inspection Facility (BSIF) Exit at the Pharr International Bridge. This achievement was celebrated with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, highlighting the city’s commitment to proactive infrastructure investments. The event was attended by a host of dignitaries, including state, federal, and regional partners, underscoring the collaborative effort that brought these projects to fruition.

These infrastructure improvements were realized through the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Donations Acceptance Program (DAP) 15, an innovative partnership that allows private sector and local government donations to fund border infrastructure projects. Pharr holds the distinction of being the first port of entry to participate in this program, setting a precedent for future collaborations.

Pharr’s Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez, M.D., emphasized the importance of these projects for the city’s economic future. “Our administration has long prioritized infrastructure improvements at the Pharr International Bridge,” he stated. “Through innovative partnerships like DAP, we have enhanced cross-border movement and accommodated future growth at the Pharr International Bridge.”

The project saw the addition of new inbound commercial lanes and exit booths, significantly increasing the capacity of the Pharr Land Port of Entry (LPOE). This expansion facilitates faster and more efficient processing of commercial traffic, particularly trucks carrying secure, certified, and empty loads from Mexico to the United States. The new Commercial Entry Lanes and Booths expanded the roadway, reducing congestion and improving inspection efficiency. Similarly, the new Commercial Exit Lanes and Booths were relocated to streamline traffic flow and enhance connectivity to the new BSIF, ensuring timely truck inspections and cargo delivery.

Mayor Hernandez expressed pride in the city’s collaborative efforts, stating, “Pharr’s collaboration with CBP and GSA through DAP expedited these projects, producing tangible solutions to critical needs and improving trade and productivity at our international port of entry.”

The General Services Administration (GSA) and CBP played crucial roles in these enhancements, working closely with the City of Pharr to ensure the timely and efficient completion of the projects. Their joint effort underscores the federal commitment to improving trade infrastructure, fostering economic growth, and enhancing border security.
