POLICE: East Texas inmate re-arrested after assaulting officer, escaping custody at Tyler hospital

TATUM, Texas — An East Texas inmate was re-arrested after police say he assaulted an officer and escaped custody.

According to the Tatum Police Department, on Sunday, June 10, a patrol officers was called to a business on N. Hill St. regarding an assault. 

When the officer arrived on scene, they arrested Antwuan Jefferson for robbery and assault cause bodily injury after he allegedly robbed a victim and took an undisclosed amount of money. Jefferson was then booked into the Rusk County Jail 

The TPD says the officer was then told to take Jefferson to a Tyler hospital for medical treatment that did not have anything to to do with his arrest or incarceration.

Police say after he was seen by medical staff, Jefferson assaulted the officer and tried to take their gun. The TPD says the officers was able to retain the gun, but was shoved to the ground by Jefferson who ran into the parking lot, then into the street.

The officer and a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper were able to capture Jefferson and take him back into custody. 

Jefferson was taken back to the Rusk County Jail and was booked on the following charges: RobberyAssault cause bodily injuryAssault on peace officerEscape while arrested

His bond has not been set.
