MCKINNEY, Texas — A heavy police presence responded to an “active crime scene” at a North Texas Red Roof Inn Thursday afternoon.

WFAA chopper footage of the scene showed a group of nearly 10 officers gathered outside a downstairs room of the Red Roof Inn in the 1300 block of North Central Expressway in McKinney Thursday afternoon with multiple police vehicles parked outside.

McKinney Police confirmed in a post on social media that officers were investigating an “active crime scene” in the area of the Red Roof Inn.

Police asked people to avoid the area as the investigation continues, but said there was no “active threat to the community.” However, WFAA obtained a text sent to parents from Faubion Middle School that said the campus went on a secure status around 3 p.m. Students have since been released to their parents.

The Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA), one of the largest law enforcement associations in Texas, said in an X post that a McKinney PD K9 was shot and killed in the line of duty during an officer-involved shooting.

“Rest easy, K9 hero. Your watch is over, but your legacy lives on,” the agency said.

Chopper footage captured the moment the K9 was carried from the patrol car into an UrgentVet clinic. Officers stood in line, saluting the fallen K9.
