Police: Jacket at root of Super 1 stabbing case

A 68-year-old man is suspected of stabbing another man in a dispute over a jacket.

Charles Tarrance, who was identified as a transient in a report on the incident, remained in the Gregg County Jail on Thursday following his Sunday arrest. His bond was set at $10,000 on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The incident occurred outside of the Super 1 Foods store at 2301 W. Loop 281.

A Longview police officer’s report about the incident says Tarrance was arrested at 8:48 a.m. Sunday.

“Victim told me that he and two other subjects were talking outside Super 1 Foods. A male subject, later identified as Charles Tarrance, approached victim and accused him of stealing his jacket,” the report says. “Victim told Terrance that he did not steal the jacket. Victim said that’s when Charles pulled a knife and made a stabbing motion towards victim with the knife and cut him on the hand and the abdomen.”

Officers located Tarrance at Avenue B and Kenwood, after witnesses described him as “an elderly white male with a beard and long hair” and who had a cane.

“Charles admitted to the stabbing to the arresting officers,” and he was taken into custody, the report says. “Charles was searched and officers found multiple knives, blood on his pants and blood on his cane.”

Information about the victim’s condition was not immediately available.
