The Vatican said that Pope Francis was in critical condition following a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis while he was being treated for pneumonia.
DALLAS — A day after the Vatican announced Pope Francis was in critical condition, officials are expected to provide an update on the pope’s condition this afternoon.
Pope Francis suffered a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis while being treated for pneumonia and a complex lung infection, according to the Associated Press. The 88-year-old pope also received “high flows” of oxygen to help him breathe and blood transfusions after tests showed low counts of platelets, the Vatican said in a late update.
Doctors have said Francis’ condition is touch-and-go, given his age, fragility and pre-existing lung disease. More clinical tests were conducted Sunday morning and a medical update is expected from Rome around noon central time, Vatican officials said.
