Priority 5-star safety target Jonah Williams projected to Texas A&M

There won’t be any notable team news from Norman for a while. The players will enjoy their time off until they have to report back to Norman for summer workouts. This time of the year is crucial for recruiting. During this time of the year, evaluations, visits, and commitment decisions are made for rising senior high school football players nationwide.

Oklahoma has done an excellent job crafting the 2025 recruiting class. 247Sports has them ranked No. 6 nationally, with 14 commits already locked in. They are far from finished, and near the top of their board is five-star safety Jonah Williams. Williams is electric and simply one of the best players in the nation. He’s the No. 12 player in the nation according to 247Sports’ player rankings and is a composite five-star prospect.

He plays all over the field for his Ball High School team but projects as a safety in college. He is also a formidable baseball player, so schools recruiting him have had to pitch the possibility of playing two sports. Oklahoma has been a player in this recruitment for a few years now, and up until recently, Oklahoma was thought of as the leader.

That changed when Steve Wiltfong of On3 logged a prediction for the talented player to land with Texas A&M on Monday afternoon. The significance of this can’t understated. Namely, because Wiltfong is one of the most connected people in high school football recruiting. His prediction is a monumental indictment of what team is usually in the driver’s seat.

That now begs the question. What is Oklahoma going to do? Williams hasn’t been on campus in months. The Sooners are still in pursuit of safety Omarion Robinson. Will Oklahoma fight back to get into this, or is A&M going to earn a commitment over an old foe?

Scouting Report

Steve Sisney/For The Oklahoman

As a safety, Williams shows fantastic awareness in zone coverage and a natural ability to attack the ball in the air. He’s a wrap-up tackler, displaying good form when attacking ball carriers and wide receivers. And he attacks the line of scrimmage with aggressiveness and speed.

Predictions

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Back in February, a flurry of predictions favored the Oklahoma Sooners, including Steve Wiltfong, then of 247Sports. Even Texas reporter Geoff Ketchum predicted the Sooners would be the landing spot for Williams. Well, in the last few days, the tides have seemed to turn toward the Aggies, with Wiltfong, Landyn Rossow, and Mark Passwaters all predicting Williams to the Aggies.
