AUSTIN (KXAN) — This is how they made me, Houston, Texas, baby: A new resolution filed in the Texas Legislature could pay homage to Beyoncé after her historic wins at the 2025 Grammy Awards.
Several lawmakers joined State Rep. Lauren Ashley Simmons, a south Houston representative who authored the resolution to formally congratulate her fellow H-Town native on the three awards earned at the 2025 ceremony.
On Sunday, Beyoncé took home the coveted Album of the Year award, marking her first win in the category and the first time a Black woman won the award since Lauryn Hill took home Album of the Year in 1999 for “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.”
Beyoncé also received accolades for Best Country Album and Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “II Most Wanted” with Miley Cyrus. Her win marked the first time a Black woman won a Grammy for a country music song in 50 years (since The Pointer Sisters’ 1975 win) and the first time a Black artist won Best Country Album.
The latest wins follow a storied career in the music industry, where Beyoncé first received a Grammy nomination at age 17 while a part of Destiny’s Child. She currently holds the record for most awards and most nominations received by any artist, with 35 wins and 99 nominations, respectively.
A generational talent, Beyoncé has proven herself to be one of the most accomplished entertainers in the history of popular music, and she is a source of tremendous pride to her fellow Texans; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Beyoncé for winning the album of the year, country album of the year, and best country duo/group performance honors at the 2025 Grammy Awards and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Beyoncé as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
