Gas costs and supply chain shortages might both get worse from a nationwide rail strike. Earlier this week, BNSF, CSX, Norfolk Southern, and Union Pacific placed embargoes on certain goods. It is estimated that a countrywide train shutdown would cost $2 billion per day. A train workers’ strike, according to the Retail Industry Leaders Association, would be “devastating” to the sector. More than any other kind of transportation, rail transit makes up 40% of the volume of long-distance freight. If a strike went on for several days, gas prices may rise by $0.35 to $0.75 per gallon.
