SAN ANTONIO – Rain is not stopping people from participating in a longstanding San Antonio tradition of camping at local parks for Easter weekend.
“I came out here around seven in the morning. As I was setting up it started pouring on me,” Robert Perez, a camper said.
Perez was looking for the perfect camping spot at Woodlawn Lake Park Thursday morning.
“Last year, we were in a different spot. There was just no shade,” Perez said.
This year, Robert made sure to claim a camping spot with shade.
“On the weekend, I will have my sister-in-law, my wife, our children, spend the day with the family. That’s really what it’s all about,” Perez said.
It’s the second year his family will participate in the San Antonio tradition of camping at a park for Easter.
Perez says they will have a lot of food and music.
“We make the most of it and it’s the time we are all together,” Perez said.
The park curfew will be lifted beginning at 11 p.m. and will resume at 11 p.m. on Easter Sunday.
“People will be allowed to camp overnight on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. People can enjoy their days at the park. We will have volunteers and stewards out and about, reminding folks we have trash bags, remember to recycle and pick up your trash before you leave,” Connie Swann, a marketing manager for Parks and Recreation for the City of San Antonio.
Park officials say during last year’s Easter weekend, visitors disposed of 19 tons of trash and five tons of recycling in Brackenridge Park alone.
