Residents in Northeast Side community raise frustrations over fatal shooting

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Residents at a Northeast Side neighborhood share their frustrations after two separate but connected deadly incidents happened on Saturday.

San Antonio police responded to shots fired at a home shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday in the 7000 block of Woodlake Parkway.

The department released information that a suspect opened fire at a home within Woodlake Estates.

First responders found the victim, identified as 25-year-old Jennifer Rodriguez, inside the home with multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Residents of Woodlake Estates said this could have been prevented.

“They should have fixed that gate a long time ago,” Donna Emerson said, referencing a broken gate that would typically enclose their neighborhood. “That girl would not have died otherwise, and that makes me very mad.”

Ano ther resident claims she heard several gunshots at the time of the shooting.

“I just heard the gun like six or five times,” Sandra said. “I just thought in my mind that somebody could kill us or kill somebody else.”

At this time, it’s unclear what led up to the shooting, according to SAPD.

During a Bexar County Sheriff’s Office news conference, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said a deputy on patrol heard gunshots and saw a vehicle speeding.

BCSO said the deputy attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over. According to deputies, the driver lost control of the vehicle, hit a pole and the driver was ejected from the vehicle.

The driver, identified as 43-year-old Priscilla Gaiton, died at the scene.

BCSO said a passenger, identified as 19-year-old Ethan Gonzales, allegedly got out of the vehicle and began running away.

When deputies caught up to Gonzales, they detained him. He was later taken to the hospital where, according to Salazar, he attempted to run again and was tased and taken back into custody.

Gonzales is facing two charges, including evading arrest detention and escape from custody. However, it is unclear if he will face a charge with the deadly shooting that started the entire incident.

Salazar said an “AK-style rifle” with a live round in the weapon was found inside Gaiton’s vehicle at the crash scene. The sheriff did not disclose who the weapon belonged to. A fully loaded magazine, detached from the rifle, was also found near the crash scene, BCSO said.

KSAT reached out to Woodlake Estates regarding the broken gate. However, the mobile home park office did not answer.
