Gov. Greg Abbott announced this week that the city of Rockwall has become the fifth community in Texas to receive the Tourism Friendly Texas certified community designation from Travel Texas. This recognition – part of the program’s inaugural year – underscores Rockwall’s commitment to developing tourism as a key driver of economic growth and job creation.
“Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies,”Abbott said, noting that tourism generated more than $193.8 billion and supported 1.3 million jobs in Texas in 2023. He praised Rockwall for its efforts and encouraged other communities to apply for the designation.
Travel Texas director Tim Fennell highlighted Rockwall’s unique blend of lakeside activities, shopping and dining as an ideal North Texas getaway.
Rockwall Mayor Trace Johannesen expressed pride in Rockwall’s achievement, emphasizing the economic benefits and community partnerships that tourism brings.
“We are honored to receive the Tourist Friendly Texas Community designation,” said Rockwall Mayor Trace Johannesen. “This achievement will significantly boost our efforts to promote Rockwall as a top leisure destination while also strengthening partnerships with our local community. It highlights the vital role tourism plays in economic growth and job creation. We’re excited to continue creating a welcoming environment for visitors and residents alike and look forward to the positive impact on our city’s future.”
Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce chairman Shane Hollas echoed Johannesen’s sentiment – underscoring the city’s commitment to providing an exceptional experience for visitors.
“We are thrilled that Rockwall has been recognized,” Hollas said. “This recognition reflects our commitment to welcoming visitors and providing an exceptional experience through our vibrant local businesses, scenic attractions and engaging community events.
