Rodent feces found at Drop Zone Café & Bar, employees blame cold weather as cause

SAN ANTONIO – A North Side cafe restaurant is back serving meals after Metro Health shut it down in December.

Behind the Kitchen Door is a series where KSAT investigates health inspections of local restaurants.

Drop Zone Cafe & Bar

A Dec. 16 inspection at Drop Zone Cafe & Bar, located at 1804 Carson Street, shows it’s living up to its name.

It earned an 83, but it was ordered to close until the building was cleaned and sanitized after inspectors found rodent feces along the walls, in the kitchen and prep area, and on covered food items.

An employee told KSAT that the dropping temperature led to an increase in feces.

“It kind of all came, you know, with the cold weather because we hadn’t had a problem before, but we got taken care of,” she said.

Metro Health said inspectors had visited the restaurant three times since they first found the feces. The employee told us the restaurant had called out pest control to clean things up.

“So no more rat or mouse poop in this restaurant?” asked KSAT reporter Daniela Ibarra.

“No,“ the employee responded. ”And like I said, the health inspector has been back again.”

Metro Health said the restaurant still has some issues, and inspectors plan to return this week.

Po Po Pizzeria Trattoria

The Italian restaurant, located on 8603 State Highway 151, was ordered by Metro Health to be reinspected after it earned an 84 in December.

Food on the buffet line was being kept at incorrect temperatures.

An inspector saw a container of meat sauce that was three days past its expiration date.

Popeyes Louisiana Chicken

The fried chicken chain restaurant earned a 79 on its December 2024 inspection.

On the menu are several health code violations. Inspectors found chicken that had to be thrown out for not being the correct temperature.

Some employees did not wear hairnets.

An inspector noted that not all of its employees had been certified to handle food.
