San Antonio restaurant reopens after suspension, but rodent issues linger

SAN ANTONIO – A North Side Chinese restaurant is back serving meals after having its license suspended by Metro Health.

Behind the Kitchen Door is a series where KSAT investigates health inspections of local restaurants.

Beijing Express

Beijing Express, located at 4407 Blanco Road, is still dishing out orders.

A Nov. 14 inspection shows Metro Health ordered the restaurant to stop serving food after its license was suspended. It earned a 79.

On the report, Metro Health inspectors noted the restaurant had dirty equipment.

They also found raw food being kept above ready-to-eat foods and moldy cabbage.

Rodent droppings were spotted in the food prep area and throughout the restaurant, according to the report.

“We take care of a customer because — I need a job, you know?” said an employee.

The owner showed KSAT paperwork proving their license was reinstated the next day, which Metro Health confirmed.

The report, however, showed the restaurant hadn’t completely cleaned up its act.

“It says that the inspectors still observed some rodent droppings in the establishment. So there was still rat or mouse poop in your restaurant?” KSAT asked the employee.

“We don’t have any more,” responded the employee. “We don’t see any more.”

Culebra Meat Market #7

The grocery store on 3017 Blanco Road had its share of pest problems, earning it a 79, according to a November 2024 inspection.

In the butcher area, an inspector saw rodent feces and dead bugs.

Employees also let frozen raw pork skin thaw at room temperature.

Sonic Drive-In

The fast food spot on 1435 Austin Highway earned an 86 on its November 2024 inspection.

On the menu are several health code violations. Inspectors found bugs — dead and alive.

An inspector noted that not all of its employees had been certified to handle food.
