Sandwich Hag – a popular Vietnamese sandwich spot near Downtown Dallas – will serve its last lunch service May 18.

Owner and chef Reyna Duong announced via Instagram the sandwich shop will be “taking a long break, a much needed sabbatical of sorts.” She assured her 12,500 followers that Sandwich Hag will not cease to exist. Duong did not disclose further information.

As for its sister coffee shop ChimLanh, which operates from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., there was no information disclosed on whether the coffee shop will follow Sandwich Hag’s slumber. However, Duong said “exciting news” will be shared next week.

Duong, who was a 2023 James Beard finalist for Best Chef in Texas, opened Sandwich Hag over a decade ago to honor and carry on her mother’s tradition of making food from scratch as well as give her brother an inclusive place of employment, according to the Sandwich Hag website. Not only has Duong been recognized across numerous publications for her fresh, Vietnamese-inspired sandwiches, she also has transformed the way a businesses can hire, advocating for people with different races and abilities such as Down syndrome.

Sandwich Hag serves bánh mi sandwiches with no omissions or substitutions – you get what you get. In addition to banh mi sandwiches, which is served on a Vietnamese baguette roll, the shop also offers chips, curry soup, fried egg rolls, breakfast croissants and other pastries, coffee, tea and refreshers.
