SAPD Mounted Patrol event canceled after department mistakenly announces its return

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police Department is walking back an incorrect news release announcing the return of its mounted patrol unit, an SAPD public information officer said Friday.

SAPD had said the unit would return on Saturday, Feb. 1, as part of the 2025 Western Heritage Parade & Cattle Drive festivities.

However, while the department’s initial release made it seem the team would be making its “grand reintroduction,” the Friday release clarified that officers would instead be riding their own horses.

“The department does not have a Mounted Patrol Team,” SAPD Sgt. William Moscoso said in an email. “SAPD Officers will be participating in the Western Heritage Parade and Cattle Drive with their personally owned horses.”

The unit had last been in operation almost 25 years ago.

The parade and cattle drive will air on KSAT 12 this Saturday. More details here.
