On Dec. 24, 2024, police said members of its street crimes and gun crimes units received information on two people wanted for violent felony warrants. The officers began surveillance at an apartment complex in the 100 block of Melrose Place, police said.
Hours later, around 1 p.m., officers witnessed the individuals leave an apartment and drive to a nearby H-E-B in the 300 block of West Olmos Drive in a suspected stolen vehicle.
After the individuals left the H-E-B and walked back to the suspected stolen vehicle, officers attempted to apprehend the suspects, but they both fled on foot, SAPD said.
The body camera video picked up the voice of one SAPD officer informing other officers that one of the two suspects had a gun during a foot pursuit.
In the video, a plain-clothed SAPD detective saw one of the suspects, later identified as 19-year-old Damion Tremayne Holmes, and approached him in the 3200 block of Howard Street. Police said Holmes saw the detective and ran in the opposite direction.
Later in the video, Holmes’ gun was seen pointed in the detective’s direction as he began falling to the ground.
The detective then shot Holmes twice, authorities said. He was rushed to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
No other injuries were reported.
SAPD said the detective who fired their weapon has been identified as Christopher Zygmont, who has 22 years of service with the department.
Authorities said their investigation is ongoing. The Bexar County District Attorney’s Office is also reviewing the incident, SAPD said.
One day later, a relative of Holmes identified him as the 19-year-old injured in the police shooting.
KSAT also obtained an affidavit that identified Holmes as a suspect accused of shooting and paralyzing a man on Dec. 9, 2024.
