SEC program loses former 5-star running back for season due to injury

   

An SEC program has lost a former 5-star running back ahead of the 2024 season.

Texas A&M running back Rueben Owens is expected to miss the season after suffering a significant lower body injury during a scrimmage on Saturday, ESPN reported.

Coach Mike Elko, who is entering his first season in College Station after arriving from Duke, later confirmed the news.

Owens, a consensus top 30 prospect and top 3 running back in the 2023 class, produced 743 all-purpose yards and 3 touchdowns and earned SEC All-Freshman honors last season.

He was set to have a major role in the Aggies backfield in 2024 alongside junior Amari Daniels, who gained 532 yards and scored 6 TDs last season, and junior Le’Veon Moss (484 rushing yards, 5 touchdowns).

The Aggies also added Stanford graduate transferEJ Smith, the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame running backEmmitt Smith. Smith rushed for 557 yards and five touchdowns over 24 career games with the Cardinal.

Texas A&M will open its season Aug. 31 at home againstNotre Dame.
