DALLAS – Two juveniles are in custody after a security guard was fatally shot late Friday at a CVS Pharmacy in downtown Dallas, according to police.
“Their names will not be released due to their age,” Dallas police said Saturday in a news release.
Anthony Egeonu, 39, was shot and later died at the hospital after confronting two shoplifters just after 11 p.m. at the CVS in the 1400 block of Main Street. One of the suspects pulled out a gun and opened fire before both ran away from the scene, police said.
A woman who lives next to the CVS told CBS News Texas that crime is a major issue in the area.
“It’s certainly scary, because I am at that CVS weekly … and just thinking about someone going in and doing that,” said Rebecca Montgomery.
A spokesperson for CVS told CBS News Texas that a third-party security company employed the victim. The store and pharmacy were open the day after the shooting.
“We’re cooperating with Dallas police as they investigate the incident that occurred at our Main Street store last night,” the spokesperson said.
Dallas police urge anyone with information to contact Detective M. Bird at marc.bird@dallaspolice.gov or (214) 671-3677.
