The documentary was screened in January as part of the U.S. Documentary Competition, 30 years after Yolanda Saldivar killed the Tejano music icon.

According to the Sundance Film Festival’s website, the jury awarded the film for its ability to “transport” to a specific era, exploring family and heritage.

The full jury citation from the Sundance Film Festival 2025 is below:

“This award goes to a film that transported us to a specific time and place, evoking themes of family, heritage, love, and adolescence. The power of the story speaks to the essential nature of the archive — employed in this film to chart the emergence of a once-in-a-generation talent. The winner of the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Archival Storytelling goes to Selena y Los Dinos.”

The film is about Quintanilla’s life and legacy, including moments from her life on tour and home videos that have not been released from the musician’s family archives.

“Selena y Los Dinos” is executive produced by Selena’s siblings Suzette and AB Quintanilla III and directed by five-time Emmy nominee Isabel Castro.

Selena’s widower, Chris Perez, shared the news on Instagram.

“THANK YOU to everyone who voted and also to everyone that continues to push Selena’s music/legacy into the future,” Perez said, in part.

Suzette also announced the film’s win on her social media.

Suzette teased the documentary’s release details and said they will soon “announce where you will be able to watch” the documentary.
