Sen. Ted Cruz pays visit to San Antonio to address Kids Online Safety Act

SAN ANTONIO – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz was in San Antonio on Thursday to discuss the importance of Congress passing the Kids Online Safety Act.

The bill, which sets out requirements to protect minors from online harms, was approved two weeks ago by the Senate Commerce Committee. Cruz is a ranking member of the committee.

Cruz held a news conference with three parents whose children committed suicide due to cyberbullying.

Among those parents was Maureen Molak. Her son, David, took his own life in 2016 following months of relentless and devastating cyberbullying. Since then, Maureen Molak co-founded the David’s Legacy Foundation, a nonprofit organization that aims to eliminate cyberbullying and other types of bullying of children and teens through education, legislation and legal action.

Molak worked with state lawmakers to pass David’s Law in 2017. She is now pushing for the passage of KOSA.

Cruz said he is confident the bill will be passed into law, but even then, it won’t end the problem.

“I’m not going to suggest to you that KOSA is gonna solve everything. We’re going to have a lot more work to do protecting our kids, and this is not gonna be a task that is over today, tomorrow, next week or next month. But it is a serious and meaningful step forward,” he said.

If you or someone you love is struggling and need help, please call the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

Cruz was also in San Antonio to address the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce at a 2023 Senatorial Series luncheon. Cruz gave chamber members an inside perspective on what is happening at our nation’s capital and his priorities for this legislative session and beyond.
