Earlier this week, Texas Sen. Charles Schwertner — a Republican who represents the area of Georgetown in District 20 — was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. As one of her work colleagues, State Sen. Judith Zaffirini (D, D-21) provided her views on the arrest.
The Laredo leader said she was saddened by the news that a colleague of hers would pass through such an ordeal. Zaffirini did state, however, that she has already seen how he has publicly come out and apologized for his mistake.
“I was saddened to learn about Sen. Schwertner’s arrest for DUI,” she said. “He has acknowledged his mistake and apologized to his family, constituents and others.”
Zaffirini, who represents Laredo and Webb County, said she was relieved nobody was hurt during the ordeal as he was potentially driving while intoxicated.
“I’m grateful and relieved that no one was hurt, and I hope this situation is a reminder to everyone not to drink and drive,” Zaffirini said. “Meanwhile, like others who know and like Sen. Schwertner, I will reserve further comments until we learn more.”
Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick also issued a statement this week but said he is reserving further comment regarding waiting for the final outcome in court before making additional statements. The second in command of the state executive government said he was informed of the state senator’s arrest by his staff.
