Senate Drama: Schumer Tries Freezing PA’s Dave McCormick Out of Senate Orientations

Just when you thought the drama following last week’s election was winding down, something new comes along. This time it’s in the Senate.

Has anyone told New York’s Senator Chuck Schumer that, in January, he will be Senate Minority Leader? That is if his Democrat colleagues don’t kick him to the curb. Because, as is usual for the New York Democrat, he’s acting awfully big for his britches. In his latest imbroglio, he’s trying to prevent Senator-elect Dave McCormick from attending Senate orientations. McCormick is projected to win Pennsylvania’s Senate seat after defeating incumbent Bob Casey Jr. – who has not yet conceded the race.

Wasn’t there something about people not accepting the results of elections?

Politico’s Daniel Lippman informs us that PA Governor Josh Shapiro, who was passed over in the Kamala Harris running-mate sweepstakes, is considering dumping $2 million into a recount, even though the Associated Press has called the race for McCormick – and as of this writing, McCormick is leading Casey by almost 40,000 votes. Granted, that’s close – 0.6 percent – but a recount is still unlikely to affect the outcome.

Senator-elect McCormick is doing the right thing – going to the orientation regardless, effectively telling Senator Schumer where he can stick it. And honestly, why not? If Bob Casey Jr. feels so strongly about it, and if PA’s Governor Shapiro is so concerned about the need for a recount, then let both of them attend. What can it hurt? And no matter who emerges from the contest and the recount as the victor, they will be ready to go to work. And it’s hard to see why Casey is concerned anyway; he’s the incumbent, who presumably doesn’t require the orientation.

Pennsylvania, which was the swing state in the presidential election, went handily for Donald Trump and JD Vance – and the Trump ticket proved to have some longer and broader coattails than a lot of people expected, which ended up being good for Dave McCormick and plenty of other down-ticket races. One of the more satisfying results of that? As mentioned above – in January, Chuck Schumer will be, at best, Senate Minority Leader.

One can’t help but feel a little schadenfreude over that.

Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) has offered his assistance in conveying Senator-elect McCormick into the orientation:

It’s beginning to look a lot like Senator Chuck Schumer is suffering from microdeckia. He should see someone about that.
