SHERIFF: Stolen cattle, including 8 dead, found in abandoned trailer along East Texas highway

HOUSTON COUNTY, Texas — Officials are investigating after 14 stolen cattle, including eight that are dead, were found in an abandoned trailer in Houston County.

Houston County Sheriff Zak Benge said in a Facebook post that deputies responded to the trailer that was seen along State Highway 19 South on Wednesday. That trailer had 14 large Angus cattle. Eight of those cattle were found dead.

Deputies learned the cattle were stolen and an investigation into both theft and cruelty to livestock animals is underway. The owner of the cattle was notified and the sheriff’s office is working with Special Ranger Bobbitt of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, Benge said.

“This type of activity will not be tolerated and we will do all we can through our office to hold these thieves and abusers accountable for their actions,” Benge said.

Benge thanked local cowboys Ronnie Goolsby and Klay Currie and the local Texas Department of Transportation office for the help to move the live cattle and dispose of the dead cattle.
