Study reveals many Texas school buses lack seatbelts despite law

KVUE Defenders and Austin American-Statesman teamed up to investigate the school bus seat belt situation in Texas in the wake of the deadliest school bus crash in the state in nearly a decade. Two people died and at least 11 were injured in the March 22 crash in which a concrete truck struck a Hays Consolidated Independent School District bus. Texas is one of nine U.S. states with a law requiring seat belts on school buses. In a survey of 13 Central Texas school districts, KVUE and the Statesman found that only four of the districts had 100% of their buses fitted with seat belts.

“What is not known statewide, however, is the number of buses each Texas school district has kept on the road without seatbelts since the 2017 law,” KVUE reported.
