Smelling a movie? | Alamo Drafthouse Cedars using Smell-o-Vision technology for new A24 film screenings

There’s nothing like watching a movie on the silver screen, and Joya Studios is looking to get movie fans even more immersed with scent.

DALLAS — Going to the theater is always an event. You get to see the images on a massive screen, hear the boom of the action through quality speakers and now, you can even smell the movie!

Alamo Drafthouse is partnering with A24 and Joya Studio to create a “multi-sensory experience” for early screenings of the new movie ‘HERETIC’. Movie fans will be able to smell scents from the new film, including the aroma of blueberry pie, right when they come on screen, adding to the theater immersion experience.

Alamo Drafthouse said in a release that fans will also receive exclusive treats and scratch-and-sniff cards commemorating the film’s release.

The immersive scent-filled experience will be exclusively shown at Alamo Drafthouse theaters nationwide for one night only on Oct. 30. In Dallas, the screening will happen at the theater chain’s Cedars location off Bothan Jean Blvd.

Joya Studio’s technology utilizes cold-air diffusion to disperse the smells without using water, heat, alcohol, or petrochemical-based solvents.

‘HERETIC’ is A24’s newest film. It follows two missionaries who become trapped by Mr. Reed (played by Hugh Grant) and are forced to prove their faith through a twisted cat-and-mouse game. The film will be released in theaters on Nov. 8.
