Snow Day Fun: How to keep your children safe in the cold

Keep your kids safe in the snow with tips from Dr. Marcial Oquendo: Layer up, stay hydrated, and avoid frostbite and hypothermia.

DALLAS — With snow in the forecast, children everywhere are ready to bundle up and dive into winter fun. But as parents and guardians, it’s essential to make sure they stay safe while enjoying the chilly weather.

Dr. Marcial Oquendo, a pediatrician at Guadalupe Medical Center in Dallas, stresses the importance of frostbite and hypothermia prevention for kids playing outside in freezing and snowy temperatures.

“Signs of hypothermia, especially in kids, include excessive shivering, slurred speech, and unusual behavior,” says Dr. Oquendo. “Their skin can appear pale, bright red, purple, or even blue.”

These are critical signs that they need to come indoors immediately.

The Importance of Layers

Dr. Oquendo recommends layering as the key to keeping kids warm and safe. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add an insulating layer like fleece, and finish with a waterproof outer layer to shield against snow and wind. Proper gloves and waterproof boots are a must to protect fingers and toes from frostbite.

“The better protected they are, the more time they can spend outside,” says Dr. Oquendo.

However, if your child’s outfit isn’t waterproof or lacks proper insulation, limit their time outdoors and encourage frequent breaks to warm up inside.

Hydration and Supervision

Even in cold weather, kids can get dehydrated, especially if they’re running around in thick layers. Regular hydration breaks are just as important as staying warm. Dr. Oquendo also advises checking on children every 20-30 minutes.

For extra safety, avoid frozen ponds, lakes, or pools, which might not be stable enough to hold weight.

“Falling through ice can lead to severe hypothermia or worse,” warns Dr. Oquendo.

Creative Snow Day Fun

If you’re ready to brave the cold, don’t worry if you don’t have a sled. Household items like cookie sheets or storage bin lids can double as makeshift sleds, turning an ordinary backyard into a winter wonderland. Just don’t forget the layers!

With a little preparation, your family can enjoy a snowy day safely. Stay warm, hydrated and have fun!
