Here’s a list of fun things to do on a snow day before the devices are switched on.
DALLAS — It’s a snow day and the kids are home from school – so it’s important to keep them active and engaged even when the weather outside is frightful.
Here’s a list of fun things to do before the devices are switched on.
1. Build a snowman
Whether you’re partial to Olaf or Frosty the Snowman — no snow day is complete without building a friendly snowman out in the yard.
2. Host your own Winter Olympic games
Put a North Texas twist on traditional outdoor snow activities and go for the gold! It could be a snowball fight (dodgeball style), a snow angel competition, a sledding race, or a race to see who can make the most snowballs in a certain time.
3. Balloon tennis
Create paddles out of paper plates and popsicle sticks, then try to keep a balloon in the air. It’s harder than it seems.
4. Paint in the snow/Paint kindness rocks
Take the paint outside and turn your front or backyard into a colorful spectacle. While the paint brushes are out, here’s a chance to spread kindness with messages on painted rocks that you can bury in the snow. People will have a chance to discover them once the ice melts.
5. Draw on the windows with dry-erase markers
Yes, you can write on glass with dry-erase markers and still erase the marks. Kids can draw winter-themed images like snowflakes, snowmen or snow day messages. Windows can be wiped clean with a soft rag or cloth. For the parent worried about staining the glass, you can buy designated window dry-erase markers.
6. Make DIY bird feeders
Give your neighborhood feathered friends some love by making some DIY bird feeders to set out. Start with empty orange halves, then fill them up with a variety of nuts, berries and seeds.
7. Build a fort
Spend the rest of the day cozying up in it.
8. Snow volcanoes
Here’s a chance to flex your STEM knowledge by using snow to create an explosive science experiment. To make the eruption you need a a few household ingredients: dish soap, vinegar, baking soda and food coloring.
9. Make homemade snowflakes
Pull out those coffee filters, fold them as many times as needed, and cut slits and circles. Remember to cut around the edges to make a snowflake shape.
10. Sledding
