Staley Middle School’s future remains uncertain as Frisco ISD considers options

“A long-term closure is really a denial of opportunities for these kids,” said Jeanette Alexander, Staley’s PTA President.

FRISCO, Texas — Staley Middle School is one of the oldest schools in Frisco and a cornerstone of its community. However, many parents tell WFAA they feel the school has been ‘historically underfunded’ and ‘overlooked’ by the district.

Monday night, Frisco ISD will present plans for the school’s future, but for parents like Jeanette Alexander and Christy Williams, the situation is filled with uncertainty.

“We’ve forgotten the love of what’s sitting here in the heart of Frisco,” said parent Christy Williams.

Combined, they have eight children who have attended, are currently attending, or will attend Staley Middle. For them, the school represents more than just an institution; it’s a vital part of their neighborhood.

The parents’ frustrations grew as they felt the district had not prioritized the school.

“It’s sad to think the school district doesn’t care about [the students] because that’s what it feels like. They could argue, ‘we do.’ But money talks,” Williams shared.

In 2018, voters approved a $691 million bond, a small portion of which was allocated for Staley’s refresh. While some improvements were made, the school’s outdated plumbing was beyond repair. The school did get a new roof, new painting, and carpeting. In 2024, voters rejected a $986 million bond that would have funded a new Staley Middle. That vote for Proposition B failed by a margin of 52%-48%.

“A long-term closure is really a denial of opportunities for these kids,” said Jeanette Alexander, Staley’s PTA President.

The parents are particularly worried about vulnerable students, including those facing food insecurity, special needs students, and ESL students. Jeanette Alexander emphasized the district’s motto, “To know every student by name and need,” and pointed out that these needs are seen daily at Staley. Alexander is concerned that if students are diverted, many of the students would lose the benefits of the Title One designation.

“The Frisco ISD Board of Trustees will hear a staff presentation on the future of Staley Middle School… The presentation will include information and options to help Trustees evaluate potential next steps,” read a statement from the district.

The district’s upcoming presentation will lay out potential options, but parents fear the closure of the school or the diversion of students.

“You’re splitting them up, that’s what breaks my heart,” Williams said. “That’s what gets to me because you’re going to break up friend groups.”
