State Fair of Texas to host sensory-friendly Wednesday mornings for sixth year in a row

The State Fair of Texas announced Tuesday it will host sensory-friendly mornings every Wednesday for the sixth year in a row.

The sensory-friendly Wednesdays — Oct. 2, Oct. 9 and Oct. 16 — will take place from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., according to a Tuesday news release.

The fair said it worked with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards and other local organizations to make the fair’s activities more accessible to people with disabilities.

On these mornings, the fair makes changes that accommodate those with any sensory-related concerns, the release says. The fair’s itinerary includes activities and exhibits that are “easy on the eyes and ears,” as well as designated quiet areas that will be available throughout the morning.

Rides and games in the fair’s midway are not open until noon, so sensory-friendly midway hours are from noon to 1:30 p.m., said Taylor Pulfer, a State Fair of Texas spokesperson. Lights and sounds of the midway will return at 1:30 p.m.

The fair is partnering with Joni and Friends Texas — a nonprofit that works to support people with disabilities — on the first sensory-friendly Wednesday, the release said. Families can register to have a volunteer buddy from the organization, who can provide additional support during the visit.

The State Fair of Texas opens Sept. 27 and runs through Oct. 20 at Fair Park in Dallas.
