AUSTIN (KXAN) — A recent study found that 615,000 people moved to The Lone Star State from the other 49 states.
SmartAsset, a financial technology company, looked at 2021-2022 IRS data to find where transplants to Texas came from.
A key finding from the study was that Texas gained the most people – and money – from California.
The study found that 106,882 Californians came to Texas, which made up 54,136 households. The influx also came with the wealthiest transplants, with an average household gross income of $145,960.
However, California was also the most popular destination for Texans to move to, with 23,316 households moving to The Golden State.
“Such population shifts have the potential to alter local dynamics in the job market, housing market, small business demand and even elections,” SmartAsset said.
According to the study, Florida and Texas had the second largest exchange of households, with 22,277 Floridian households coming to Texas (38,873 people) and 21,221 households leaving for Florida (37,777 people).
Louisiana placed third by adding a net of 6,677 households to Texas.
