COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – A financial report released by the Texas A&M Athletic Department Tuesday reveals that the university profited more than $6 million from the Mexico vs. Brazil soccer friendly and the George Strait concert, both at Kyle Field.
More than 85,000 people attended the soccer match on June 8. A week later a record-setting 110,905 fans witnessed the “King of Country” George Strait play the historic stadium for the first time.
Texas A&M Athletic Director Trev Alberts issued a statement to KBTX, saying the university made $2.6 million for the soccer match, and $3.9 million from the concert.
“Not only were these events profitable, but we continue to grow the overall Texas A&M brand. Additionally, our local economy benefitted greatly by bringing in people who have never been to our community,” Alberts said in the release.
The athletic department said there are currently no entertainment contracts signed to host events at Kyle Field.
“The cooperation between MexTour and MLS/SUM for the soccer match as well as the Messina Touring group with George Strait was outstanding,” Kindra Fry, assistant athletics director for special events services, added to the release. “We have shown the capability of handling events of this stature, and we will continue to work to bring entertainment to the community.”
