I came to A&M as a journalism major but was set on changing to a business major. An economics class and two math classes later, I decided business wasn’t for me after all and stuck with journalism. This was a decision that I am so thankful for.
Although I chose journalism, I didn’t know much about it and was nervous and excited to learn more. Media writing was a turning point for me. This class taught me how to write journalistically and use AP Style — oh, how I miss the Oxford commas!
It also introduced me to people who worked at The Battalion and landed me on the Life & Arts desk. This was an experience that taught some of the most memorable lessons I’ve learned at A&M.
I was hired in the spring of 2023 but started writing for The Battalion last June. To my utter shock, the very first story I wrote for The Battalion made it on the front page . This was the first but certainly not the last time I made it on the front cover, and I’m still surprised every time my story makes it in print, let alone the front page.
Whether it be struggling to meet deadlines, rushing to get to an interview, or hurriedly typing (like I am now) to get a story turned in the day after an event happens, The Battalion has taught me the struggles and payoff of journalism.
I’ve not only learned how to write — I’ve learned about people’s stories and lives. I’ve learned about the things they care about and spend their weekends and off-time doing. I’ve learned about the people who are front and center at A&M and the people who work behind the scenes.
The people I interview are the heart of every story I write, so thank you.
Thank you, Anna, Sydnei and Amy for being such patient, kind and helpful editors.
Thank you to all my fellow Life & Arts writers for always sharing your slays and nays every week with me and creating such amazing stories.
Thank you to everyone in the Student American Institute of Floral Design, an organization that I’ve been a part of since my freshman year. Creating beautiful floral arrangements every Thursday truly got me through college and introduced me to some of the best people at A&M.
Thank you, readers, for supporting The Battalion and Maroon Life Magazine; everything we do is for you.
I’m loud and proud to be a part of the oldest A&M tradition. To another 131 years of The Battalion!
