TCU wins tennis national championship

FORT WORTH, Texas — The TCU Horned Frogs are men’s tennis national champions.

The Frogs on Sunday defeated Texas in the NCAA men’s tennis championship match, 4-3, at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla.

Sebastian Gorzny earned the championship-clinching win in a three sets over Texas’ Jonah Braswell. The title match was tied 3-3 when Gorzny finished off Braswell, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Lui Maxted and Jack Pinnington also got singles wins for TCU, and TCU won the doubles draw, with victories from the pairs of Jake Fearnley and Pedro Vives and Gorzny and Pinnington.

The victory marked TCU’s first NCAA tennis national championship, and only the second time a Big 12 school has won the crown. Texas won the national title in 2019. But the Frogs are no stranger to winning on the biggest stage: The program won ITA Indoor National Championships in 2022 and 2023.

TCU defeated UC Irving, Kentucky and Ohio State before meeting Texas in the national championship match. All four victories were over teams that had won their conference title, including Texas in the Big 12. But TCU got payback in the end.

While the TCU men took home the team title, four Frogs will stay in Stillwater to compete in the NCAA individual championships, starting Monday: Fearnley and Pinnington in the singles bracket and Gorzny and Vives on the double side.

This isn’t the first time a TCU athletics team has taken home a national title this year. The TCU rifle team won the national championship back in March, their fourth national title.
