Texans add free agent RB Cam Akers to backfield

Akers, who has played five years in the league, joins Houston after playing four seasons with the Rams and one with Minnesota.

HOUSTON — The Houston Texans have made it official after rumors swirled the past few days. Free agent running back Cam Akers is joining the team.

Akers joins Houston from the Minnesota Vikings, where last year he had 60 rushes for 167 yards and two touchdowns.

He joins a backfield with first-year Texan Joe Mixon, who came to Houston from Cincinnati in the offseason, and Dameon Pierce, who has been with the Texans for the past two seasons.

Akers is in entering his sixth seasons in the NFL. He was a second-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams out of Florida State in 2020 and played four seasons there before heading to Minnesota for one.  For his career, Akers has 398 carries for 1,581 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing. He averages four yards per carry.
