Texas A&M sophomore running back Rueben Owens injured his “lower leg” during the Aggies’ fall camp scrimmage Saturday, according to a statement released by head coach Mike Elko.
The extent of the injury will be addressed at Elko’s next media availability Saturday, he said in the statement.
ESPN first reported the injury Sunday.
As a freshman, Owens saw action in all 13 games and collected 385 yards on 101 carries. He called three touchdowns.
As a former five-star recruit out of El Campo, Owens figured to factor more heavily into the Aggie offense this season. A&M also has junior running backs Le’Veon Moss and Amari Daniels, as well as graduate transfer EJ Smith on roster.
Daniels paced the Aggies in rushing yards with 532 and 6 touchdowns, followed by Moss’ 484 yards and five touchdowns. Daniels added 102 yards on 14 catches.
As a senior at Stanford, Smith rushed for 218 yards and a touchdown on 53 carries.
According to Pro Football Focus, the Aggie finished with a 91st national ranking in rushing with a 80.1 grade. Moss, a power back, was A&M’s highest-rated rusher with an 86.8 individual grade.
Daniels was on the field for the most snaps of any of the running backs last season with 129. Daniels also had the most explosive running plays with 13 last year.
Moss averaged a team-high there yards after contact per attempt, per PFF, and had the highest receiving grade of any of the running backs at 59.3.
The Aggies open the season at home against Notre Dame at 6:30 p.m. on August 31.
