Texas A&M Texarkana breaks ground on new Academic Building

TEXARKANA, Texas – Texas A&M University – Texarkana broke ground on a new $45 million Academic Building.

The state-of-the-art facility will house business, engineering and technology programs.

“This campus has more than any other campus, that includes Texas A&M University, community support in numbers that are almost unbelievable,” said John Sharp, Texas A&M University Chancellor.

A large crowd gathered Thursday morning at the future site of the new Academic Building for a groundbreaking ceremony.

The three-story building will be just over 50,000 square feet in size.

The new facility will house the Center for Financial Literacy and Investment, and a number of labs for mechanical engineering and design. It will also include a 225-seat auditorium to support large lectures and other events.

University officials believe the Academic Building will increase enrollment and fulfill the growing demand for degrees in business and technology-related fields.

“It will help us recruit and retain a higher caliber of student and serve our existing students better to get them to walk across that stage and have a good job waiting for them upon graduation here in the Texarkana area,” said Ross Alexander, TAMUT President.

“These buildings are not really just about brick and mortar. They’re really about the future of this area and the people who will learn within the walls of this building,” said Rep. Gary VanDeaver.

The project is possible through funding secured in the state legislature.

There’s been nearly $100 million invested in the Texas A&M Texarkana campus in just the last few years.

Construction on the new academic building will begin in July.

It’s expected be completed in the Summer of 2026.
