We will need some cooperation from Mexico to close the border, but it’s clear that Mexico isn’t in any mood to play nice on the issue. Unless we hit their wallets, they aren’t going to help us anytime soon.
Former State Senator Don Huffines told KTRH, “There’s no incentive at all for the government of Mexico—the state, local, and federal governments in Mexico—to secure the border.”
Luckily, even without the federal government, Texas could apply economic pressure on Mexico to force them to act. Huffines said, “We can search the vehicles, the truck traffic, we can search commercial airliners. We can stop remittances, money transfers back to Mexico.”
Huffines says that these measures, along with a few others, could help address the root cause of the border crisis without causing more legal battles between Texas and the federal government.
