Temakeria, a hand roll and sushi restaurant, is designed to look like a comic book.
DALLAS — There’s a new restaurant in Dallas, but if you think it’s all about food, you’re living in another dimension.
That’s because at Temakeria, there are only two dimensions.
“It kind of feels like you’ve stepped into a comic book,” said Alexa Rodarte, director of marketing for Trinity Groves in Dallas.
Inspired by a café in South Korea, Temakeria is the first 2D restaurant in Texas. Pretty much every surface—the walls, the floors, the furniture—is designed and drawn to look like a blank coloring book.
Rodarte says it took local artist Jonathan Krown more than two months to draw everything with paint markers.
It’s a feast for the eyes — and a literal feast.
Temaki is a kind of Japanese sushi, typically served in a cone-shaped hand roll, different than traditional sushi rolls.
However, Temakeria presents its temaki in a slightly different manner.
“Our temaki is served like a taco,” Rodarte said.
That’s why the restaurant is called Temakeria, a mixture of temaki and taqueria.
Rodarte says the restaurant isn’t just great for social media posts or foodies. It’s great for the neighborhood.
For decades, West Dallas was often ignored, but Temakeria, and the rest of Trinity Groves, is part of its reinvention.
“It draws them to come and see a side of Dallas that they have not before,” Rodarte said.
