Texas drivers are paying more than during the peak of the holiday season, which saw more than 100 million Americans drive at least 50 miles at a time.
TEMPLE, Texas — Gas prices in Texas have risen by three cents since Dec. 26, 2024, exactly one week ago.
The Texas driver pays $2.66 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, according to AAA of Texas. Experts attribute the increase to the holiday travel surge as more than 100 million Americans traveled at least 50 miles at a time.
AAA Texas surveyed the major metropolitan areas of Texas to distinguish who pays more and who pays less. Drivers in El Paso currently pay the most on average at $2.94 per gallon while drivers in Lubbock pay the least at $2.41 per gallon.
Texas remains below the national average price per gallon of regular unleaded fuel, which is currently $3.07.
Despite the price uptick, drivers statewide can be optimistic because fuel prices often decline through January. The trend is expected to continue in 2025, but cost variations can be unpredictable, AAA Texas said.
“Gas price averages have increased in recent days due to a busy year-end holiday travel period,” stated AAA Texas spokesperson Daniel Armbruster. “Now that the holidays are behind us and many parts of the nation are facing colder temperatures, demand for fuel will likely decrease and gas price averages should follow.”
