AUSTIN (KXAN) —Westlake, Vandegrift and Wimberley are all one win away from a trip to Arlington to play for a state championship.
Westlake has to get through its nemesis from the Houston area, the Galena Park North Shore Mustangs, in a 6A Division I semifinal at 2 p.m. Saturday from Legacy Stadium in Katy. The Mustangs have knocked the Chaparrals out of the playoffs in the semis the past two seasons.
Westlake defeated district rival Lake Travis 24-17 to win the Region IV championship and North Shore blasted Humble Atascocita 49-21 for the Region III crown.
In 6A Division II, Vandegrift heads north to McLane Stadium in Waco to take on Humble Summer Creek at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Vipers hammered San Antonio Harlan 47-14 to win the Region IV championship and Summer Creek clobbered Kingwood 51-7.
Wimberley dispatched Sinton 36-33 for the 4A Division II Region IV title and will stay close to home for the semis, taking on Waco La Vega at the Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.
