The new record as claimed is yet to be officially announced.

During the tumultuous weather over the weekend in Amarillo, local storm chasers documented a ‘record-breaking’ monster hailstone. Val and Amy Castor, tornado spotters located the giant hail moments before a twister touched down in Silverton Sunday evening. Those circulating a picture of the cantaloupe-size hail claim it was almost 7.25′ in size, recorded some miles away from Vigo Park (about an hour and a half drive from Amarillo).

The weather enthusiasts who work with News 9 in Oklahoma City got their hands on brick-size chunks of ice at around 7:37 pm, per local time, according to Live Storm Chasers. “Documented 7.25” hailstone 3 miles WNW of Vigo Park, Texas at 7:37pm Sunday,” Storm Chasers wrote in a post on X adding that it could be a new state record. Prior to this, the record breaking hail of 6.4′ was observed in Hondo, Texas in April 2021.

Although the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lubbock is yet to verify and then officially recoginise as the new record, yet weather enthusiasts are confident. Powerful supercells coupled with a few tornadoes tore through the panhandle of Texas and a gigantic twister was spotted in Sanford, that evening. The weather agency had warned the residents of Fritch and Amarillo to stay confined indoors.

Meanwhile, the largest hailstone ever recorded in Texas fell near Hondo measuring 6.4 inches. A 6-inch hailstone hit Johnson City in May. A report by Weather Nation TV informed that the record could not be announced without the hailstone’s inspection by those in the authority.
