Texas House District races to watch on Election Day

  

AUSTIN (KXAN) – There are 150 members of the Texas House who each serve two-year terms. Here is a look at some of the races to watch during the primary election Tuesday.

House District 17

Rep. Stan Gerdes, R-Bastrop, who has been endorsed by Gov. Greg Abbott, is seeking his second term. He is in the race against challenger Tom Glass, who has been endorsed by Attorney General Ken Paxton. Gerdes voted for Paxton’s impeachment last summer.

There is only one candidate running as a Democrat, Desiree Venable. She will face whichever candidate wins the Republican primary.

House District 19

Incumbent Rep. Ellen Troxclair, R-Boerne, is facing two challengers, Kyle Biedermann and Manny Campos, in the Republican primary election. Biedermann is a former state representative and Campos is a businessman who also serves on the board of a small business incubator, according to Ballotpedia.

There are two Democrats in the race: Dwain Handley from Beaumont and Zach Vance from Houston.

House District 20

Elected in 2016, Incumbent Rep. Terry Wilson, R-Georgetown, is seeking reelection. He was endorsed by Abbott and he is facing a GOP challenger, Elva Janine Chapa, from Brownsville.

Democrat Stephen M. Wyman is uncontested for the nomination and will face the winner of the Republican primary in November.

House District 45

Incumbent Rep. Erin Zwiener, D-Driftwood, is seeking reelection for her fourth term. She is being challenged by lawyer Chevo Pastrano in the Democratic primary.

Tennyson Moreno is the sole Republican in the race and will face the winner of the Democratic primary in November.

House District 50

Incumbent Rep. James Talarico, D-Austin, is seeking reelection and faces a primary challenger, Nathan Boynton. Talarico was first elected in 2018 and is a former public school teacher. Boynton lives in Austin and works as a sales representative and a small business owner, according to Ballotpedia.

There are no Republicans in the race.

House District 52

Incumbent Rep. Caroline Harris Davila, R-Round Rock, is the lone Republican in the race. She is the youngest Republican woman ever to be elected to the Texas House of Representatives.

There are two Democrats: Jennie Birkholz, a healthcare consultant, and Angel Carroll, a nonprofit director and educator, who are in the race for the primary’s seat.

House District 53

There are two Republicans in the race: Hatch Smith, Chief Administration Officer at a Llano hospital; and Wesley Virdell, who is endorsed by multiple Republicans, including Senator Ted Cruz, Congressman Chip Roy, and Paxton.

The incumbent, Rep. Andrew Murr, R-Kerrville, is not in the race to be reelected. He led the impeachment trial of Paxton.

From San Antonio, Joe P. Herrera is the only Democrat in the race. He works as a Key Account Manager for the Ferrara Candy Candy Company and as a sales representative for Hershey Chocolate, according to Ballotpedia.

House District 68

Incumbent Rep. David Spiller, R-Jacksboro, is facing GOP challenger Kerri Kingsbery, who is endorsed by Paxton. Spiller was an impeachment manager during Paxton’s trial.

Writer Stacey Swann is the sole Democrat in the race.

House District 85

Incumbent Rep. Stan Kitzman, R-Bellville, is seeking reelection and was endorsed by Abbott. He is facing GOP challenger Tim Greeson, who is endorsed by Paxton.

There are no Democrats in the race.

After the primary election, Texans will vote on the final ballots in November to decide who will take office in 2025.
