AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Tuesday, Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan announced the creation of a committee “to examine advancements in artificial intelligence.”
The House Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies will study the “current state of AI/ET and its uses,” according to a news release from Phelan’s office. This will then determine “the impact of AI/ET on various sectors of society.”
The committee will then be able to identify “policy considerations for the responsible use of AI/ET in the state’s public and private sectors,” as well as recommend “legislative, policy, regulatory and remedial actions to address the challenges and opportunities presented by AI/ET,” the release said.
Phelan requested the committee to submit an initial report on what it finds by May 16.
“AI and other emerging technologies are increasingly being used in countless aspects of our everyday lives—from use by government agencies to applications in transportation, health care or personal productivity—and it is important we understand the wide-ranging implications of this accelerating technology,” Phelan said in the release.
The following Texas House members were appointed to the special AI committee:
- Rep. Giovanni Capriglione, Chair
- Rep. Jeff Leach
- Rep. Oscar Longoria
- Rep. Angelia Orr
- Rep. Armando Walle
