Texas lawmakers react to the passing of former President Jimmy Carter

  

TEXAS — Former President Jimmy Carter passed away Sunday, the Carter Center announced. He was 100.

Carter’s life was marked by longevity records, including being the oldest living president, having the longest post-presidency and marriage (over 75 years) and ranking as the fourth-oldest living world leader.

In the wake of this news, numerous Texas lawmakers took to social media to express their reactions and condolences.

Gov. Greg Abbott posted a statement saying, “President Carter leaves behind a great legacy as a husband, father, naval officer, governor, and Nobel prize winner, and he will be greatly missed by many.”

Former Governor of Texas and former President George W. Bush said, “James Earl Carter, Jr., was a man of deeply held convictions. He was loyal to his family, his community, and his country.”

Sen. Ted Cruz said Jimmy Carter leaves behind “a legacy of honorable military and public service. His decades-long dedication to building homes for those in need was truly remarkable.”

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said Jimmy Carter was “A wonderful, faithful servant for all.”

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said, “Farewell to the 39th President of the United States, who dedicated his entire remarkable life to serving our nation and humanity. Godspeed, Jimmy Carter.”

Houston Mayor John Whitmire released a statement on X saying, “President Carter did more than help build homes through Habitat for Humanity. He gave people hope and made them feel a greater sense of humanity through volunteering or becoming homeowners.”

Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Dallas, called Jimmy Carter “A champion of human rights, urban renewal, and peace, his legacy will forever inspire.”

Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio, posted on Threads, “Jimmy Carter was a peacemaker, a devoted humanitarian, and a lifelong voice for justice and human rights across the world.”

Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen, said, “Today, let us remember the legacy of former Pres. Jimmy Carter, a man of unwavering devotion to public service and a champion of peace.”’

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said, “The remarkable, long life and legacy of President Jimmy Carter is one to mourn and also to celebrate.”
